Lay the felt parallel to the eaves, lapping each course at least 2 inches over the underlying course. Secure the felt with only enough nails to hold it in place. If two or more pieces are required to continue a course, lap the end at least 4 inches. End laps in a succeeding course should be located at least 6 feet from end laps in the preceding course. Lap the felt 6 inches from both sides over all hips and ridges. Where the roof meets a vertical surface, carry the under lament 3 to 4 inches up the surface |

The first course starts with a full length shingle. The second course then starts with a shingles that has 6 inches removed the third course with a shingle that has 12 inches removed and so on through the sixth course which starts with a shingles that has 30 inches removed. Adjacent shingles in each course are all full length. The seventh course again starts with a full length shingles and the pattern is repeated every sixth course |
